There are certain questions I get asked when moms to be are inquiring about a newborn session, so I thought a blog post with a bit of information about what to expect when booking a newborn session with me was in order!
“When is the best time to book my newborn session?”
This is a great question! I’ve had moms book as soon as they found out they were pregnant! The earlier you can get on my schedule, the better! I keep a limited number of spots open each month for my newborn clients and they can fill months in advance. Some months are busier than others, so it’s never too early to inquire! Newborn sessions must be done when baby is between 6-20 days old. Once baby reaches about three weeks of age, they aren’t as poseable and sleepy. If you’re considering a newborn session, don’t hesitate to contact me!
“How can I book a session when I don’t know when I’ll deliver?”
I get asked this question often and it’s a great question to ask! I leave several slots open around your due date to be sure there is availability regardless of when you deliver!
“What do I need to do to prepare for our photo shoot?”
I’ll be sending over my newborn preparation packet a few days before your newborn session. Inside, you’ll find tried and true tips and tricks to make sure baby is sleepy and ready for their close up!
“What do I wear? I’m not sure I want to be in the pictures.”
I SO get how you’re feeling! I’ve had four of my own children, and I know how you feel right after delivery! With all of that said, I absolutely recommend you have portraits taken with your new baby. Newborn sessions are to capture memories of how little baby is, and images of baby absolutely convey this. However, there is nothing more special, and no better way to truly show just how he or she fit into your arms than to capture portraits of baby with mom and dad. These shots are often my favorites of the session, and I’ve been told by countless parents that they are SO glad they decided to jump in!
What do you wear? I recommend neutral colors so the focus can be on you and baby. Solid colors in black, blues, white, beige, and creams work wonderfully with my backdrops and are flattering to a variety of skin tones. Skin to skin is very soothing for baby, so I definitely go with a “less is more” approach when suggesting wardrobe for newborn sessions. Tank tops for mom and either shirtless, tank, or tee for dad work wonderfully.
Lastly, you’ve just been on the wildest ride of your life. Delivering a baby is absolutely no joke. You’re likely feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and not quite yourself. Let me reassure you that you WILL look absolutely beautiful in your portraits. I have spent YEARS finding the most flattering angles and will be sure to capture you with those in mind.
“What happens at the session?”
When you arrive to the studio, I’ll get you set up on the couch and have you feed baby until he or she gets super sleepy or falls asleep. We’ll get started as soon as baby is ready! You’ll get to sit back and relax on the couch with a front row seat to your baby’s newborn session! I’ve been told it’s pretty comfortable and some new moms are even able to sneak in a nap! There is always coffee and light snacks as well as magazines to help pass the time.
During the session, I’ll follow baby’s cues and take as many breaks as needed for nursing and snuggling. This is why a typical full session takes between 2-4 hours. I always follow baby’s lead!
“What should I expect after our session? When will I get to see my pictures?”
I deliver your online proofing gallery within two weeks of your session date. From this gallery, you’ll select your included digital images. Once you’ve selected your favorites from the session, I’ll carefully hand edit your images. You’ll receive your final gallery within 20 days!
“What does a full gallery typically look like?”
You can expect approximately 50 images to choose from with a full newborn session and approximately 25 with a simply wrapped newborn mini session. Five edited images are included, however, most new parents choose to upgrade their collection to include either additional digital images, prints, or products. I have samples of the products I offer at the studio, so if you see something you like while you’re there, please ask me about it! Each gallery features a variety of poses including macro shots of all of the details such as eyelashes and tiny toes. My favorite part about gallery reveals is seeing which images parents choose. I love it!
If you have a question about what you might expect at a newborn session with me, please ask! I’d love to do a follow up blog post to add to this list!
As always, I’d love to work with you and capture your precious little one in their first few days of life. Newborn portraits become a family heirloom that are cherished for years to come!
